- A battery is an essential component in the world of electronics. It is a portable energy storage device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy through a chemical reaction. Batteries consist of one or more electrochemical cells with external connections to power electrical devices. Each cell contains an anode, cathode and electrolyte. The chemical reactions inside the cell cause the anode and cathode to exchange electrons, leading to a flow of electrical charge through the battery to the device.
- Batteries can be categorized in many ways, but a common method is based on rechargeability (primary or secondary). Primary batteries, such as alkaline batteries, are non-rechargeable, disposable batteries. Secondary batteries, such as lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, nickel-metal hydride and lithium-ion, are rechargeable and can be used many times. Choosing a particular type of battery depends on factors such as the voltage required, energy density, cost and application of the device.

They use lithium ions that move from the negative electrode to the positive electrode when discharged, and back when charged. However, the performance of lithium-ion batteries can be affected by temperature, charge rate and age. A major concern in lithium-ion battery development is controlling the formation of lithium dendrites - small, needle-like structures that can lead to short circuits and possible battery failure.
